The Invisible Work of Fairness
This is a guest blog by Moganti Vamshi, a Purpose Lab Student Ambassador and Teesside University student.
True fairness, much like the foundations of a strong building, is often invisible when it's working best.
This was my most powerful takeaway from a recent Purpose Lab session with senior leaders from Equiniti, focused on the theme of "Powering Fairness Behind the Scenes."
The discussion challenged me to look beyond the obvious and appreciate the complex, essential work required to break down barriers to financial inclusion in the UK.
We often think about fairness in terms of grand gestures, but the session highlighted that for millions of people, it’s about the seamless and reliable administration of the money they’ve earned – their pensions and shares.
I learned that companies like Equiniti operate as quiet guardians of this trust, ensuring that life's major financial transitions, like retirement, are handled with security and care.
This work is a fundamental pillar of social mobility. Without this operational integrity, the ladder of opportunity would have missing rungs, making it much harder for people to achieve financial security.
As a Purpose Lab Student Ambassador, this has reshaped my perspective.
I now see that a career with purpose isn't limited to the non-profit sector; it can mean contributing to a corporate system that is engineered to be equitable from the inside out.
It's about ensuring the systems themselves are fair, accessible, and supportive, especially for those who are vulnerable or digitally excluded.
I've learned that powering fairness isn't just a slogan; it's a complex operational challenge, and one I am now truly inspired to be a part of solving.
