THE 15 BARRIERS TO OPPORTUNITY IN THE UK

FAIR CAREER PROGRESSION

A lack of fair career progression is one of the major barriers to opportunity.

The chance to keep developing once in work and progress in a career isn’t just important from the perspective of increasing your earnings, it’s about how you can continue to feel challenged and learn even once you’ve left your school years behind. Businesses that work out how to provide those opportunities to keep growing and moving forward will do better.

Measures:

  • Numbers employed on zero hour contracts (thousands) (Labour Force Survey, ONS 2019)

  • Percentage of people aged 16 and over on zero hours contracts, by occupation (Labour Force Survey, Office for National Statistics)

These measures have been developed by the Purpose Coalition and in consultation with the Office for National Statistics.
