Powering the Next Generation of Leaders Through Degree Apprenticeships

As the UK accelerates towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy system, one challenge sits at the heart of the transition: ensuring we have the skilled workforce needed to deliver it.

On World Youth Skills Day, The Purpose Coalition joined E.ON and a cohort of its degree apprentices for a day exploring exactly that question. Bringing together industry, education and Parliament, the programme highlighted the vital role apprenticeships are playing in developing the next generation of leaders who will help shape Britain's clean energy future.

Hosted at E.ON Next House in London, the day demonstrated how investment in young people is becoming one of the most important investments businesses can make, not only for their own future workforce but for the UK's long term economic growth and net zero ambitions.

Opening the day, Julian Lennertz, Chief Commercial Officer at E.ON Next and a member of the E.ON UK Board, welcomed apprentices to E.ON Next House and set out E.ON's ambition to make new energy work for everyone. He highlighted that the transition to clean energy is ultimately about people as much as technology, with apprentices and early careers talent playing a critical role in delivering accessible, affordable and sustainable energy for customers while shaping the future of the business.

This year's World Youth Skills Day focuses on preparing young people with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. As artificial intelligence, digital technologies and the green transition reshape the economy, employers have an increasingly important role to play in equipping young people with the practical and technical skills needed to lead that change.

Few sectors illustrate this more clearly than energy.

Delivering cleaner, more flexible and more affordable energy requires engineers, data scientists, software developers, commercial specialists and project leaders who can combine technical expertise with innovation and leadership.

Through its degree apprenticeship programme, E.ON is helping to build exactly that pipeline of talent. The company's commitment has recently been recognised nationally, with E.ON named among the UK's Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers 2026, celebrating organisations that demonstrate excellence in creating strong apprenticeship opportunities and investing in future talent.

The company offers a wide range of degree apprenticeship opportunities across disciplines including Project Management, Data Science, Digital and Technology Solutions, Commercial, Finance, Quantity Surveying, Engineering and Software Engineering. These programmes allow apprentices to gain a fully funded university degree while working on real business challenges, applying their learning from day one and helping deliver the technologies and infrastructure that will underpin the UK's clean energy transition.

Throughout the morning, apprentices explored the future of work, leadership and public policy with Rt Hon Justine Greening, Chair of The Purpose Coalition, considering how businesses can create opportunity while responding to one of the biggest economic transformations of our generation.

Hearing directly from apprentices about their experiences reinforced the value of creating clear and accessible pathways into the energy sector. As they develop their skills across engineering, digital, technology and commercial roles, they are building the expertise that will support the UK's transition to a cleaner energy system.

The afternoon shifted from industry to Parliament, giving apprentices a first-hand insight into how public policy is developed and scrutinised. The group visited the House of Commons, where they explored the role Parliament plays in shaping legislation before meeting Toby Perkins MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Apprenticeships.

The discussion focused on the future of apprenticeships, employer investment in skills and the importance of ensuring young people continue to have access to high-quality routes into professional careers.

The group also entered the Public Gallery of the House of Commons to witness a live parliamentary debate, providing a unique first-hand perspective on the democratic process and how national policy is debated and shaped. Apprentices also had the opportunity to observe a live session of the Environmental Audit Committee, chaired by Toby Perkins MP, seeing first-hand how parliamentary committees examine evidence, question witnesses and influence government policy on environmental issues central to the UK's net-zero ambitions.

The experience reinforced an important message: the future of the clean energy transition will be shaped not only by innovation and technology, but by effective collaboration between business, policymakers and the people entering the workforce today.

Degree apprenticeships have transformed the way many employers attract and develop talent, creating pathways that allow young people to earn, learn and graduate without the financial burden of traditional university routes.

For employers, they provide access to highly skilled professionals whose learning is directly connected to the needs of the business. For apprentices, they provide invaluable workplace experience, professional networks and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully from the very beginning of their careers.

As the UK continues to respond to changing technologies, evolving labour markets and the demands of net zero, programmes like E.ON's demonstrate how apprenticeships can support both economic growth and social mobility.

Rt Hon Justine Greening, Chair of The Purpose Coalition, said:

"When I introduced the Apprenticeship Levy as Secretary of State for Education, the ambition was clear: to create more high-quality opportunities that enable people from every background to build rewarding careers while giving employers the skilled workforce they need for the future.

"Seeing that vision brought to life through E.ON's degree apprenticeship programme is incredibly encouraging. These apprentices are gaining the skills, confidence and experience to become the engineers, digital specialists, project leaders and innovators who will help deliver the UK's clean energy future.

"The strongest economies are those that invest in people. By bringing together business, education and policymakers, we can ensure apprenticeships continue to open doors to opportunity while developing the talent our country needs to succeed."

By combining industry-leading training, real workplace experience and meaningful engagement with policymakers, E.ON’s degree apprenticeship programme is helping to equip the next generation with the knowledge, skills and confidence to shape both the future of energy and the future of the UK.
