New RHS and Purpose Coalition report sets out vision to grow access to horticultural careers
A new Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Purpose Coalition report outlines a commitment to continue to break down barriers to opportunity in horticulture.
The report positions horticulture as central to the UK’s green skills future with the sector playing an important role in climate, community and culture – but stresses accessibility must be further improved if its full potential is to be realised.
The Breaking Down Barriers to Heritage and Leisure report showcases RHS programmes already making a difference, including the RHS Campaign for School Gardening which has over half the schools in the country signed up, as well as the New Shoots scheme which aims to open up opportunities to underrepresented groups in horticulture.
Practical recommendations for the future and which the RHS will be incorporating into its planning include further engagement with young people, campaigning for horticulture to be recognised as a green career, expanding inclusive recruitment through mobile-friendly platforms, and piloting virtual work experience.
Rt Hon Justine Greening, former Secretary of State for Education and Chair of the Purpose Coalition, said:
“For many people, gardening and green spaces are deeply personal - linked to family, wellbeing and community. But horticulture is also central to some of the UK’s national priorities, from tackling climate change to supporting public health and building local pride. It’s a sector full of opportunity, yet too often, access is limited by background, geography or circumstance.
“This report shows that meaningful change is possible. The RHS is leading the way by embedding inclusion into everything from school outreach to career pathways.”
Suzanne Moss, Director of Learning and Public Engagement, said:
“The RHS is a leader in horticultural education and we are always looking for ways to build on the opportunities we offer to improve access to learning and careers. Whether that be through new partnerships, work experience or community and schools outreach that can extend reach and grow the potential of horticulture to improve all of our lives.”
Breaking Down Barrier to Heritage and Leisure: Royal Horticultural Society is one in a series of reports from The Purpose Coalition to improve social mobility in sectors across the economy.
