Hybrid working with purpose
Hybrid working isn’t just a buzzword. It’s reshaping how we live, connect and thrive. At Curtins, a leader in civil and structural engineering and long-time Purpose Coalition partner, hybrid working isn't just about flexibility - it's core to a commitment to social impact and wellbeing.
Curtins is employee-owned and purpose-driven. It understands that flexible working directly benefits individuals, businesses and communities. In a recent discussion with Purpose Lab Ambassadors, Rhiannon Carss, Director of Culture and Engagement, highlighted how boosting happiness, encouraging inclusivity and cutting carbon emissions are just some of the wins employers, employees and the community experience as a result of hybrid working practices in the company.
At Curtins, hybrid working combines home and office spaces, allowing staff to choose their ideal working environment. It’s not just about convenience, it's about empowering a better work-life balance. Whether you’re a working parent, caregiver or balancing personal responsibilities, the option of hybrid working is vital.
The line in the sand was drawn during the pandemic which saw a complete review of working practices in those organisations where it was possible to work at home. It was a steep learning curve for everyone and we’re still learning now. Hybrid working isn’t always perfect, and Ambassadors were able to raise some of their concerns about how it might impact their experiences in the workplace, especially as new employees. How do you avoid isolation when working from home? Can new staff truly feel connected without daily in-person interactions? Would there be fewer opportunities for informal mentoring or difficulties building relationships remotely?
Curtins takes these concerns seriously - there are regular touchpoints when working from home and actively creating spaces designed for genuine interaction at work, from collaborative areas for teamwork to quiet zones catering to neurodivergent employees or those needing privacy. Hybrid working also aligns perfectly with its sustainability and community values. Less commuting means fewer emissions and flexible schedules let employees engage more in volunteering and local community efforts.
Purpose Lab participants were very articulate about what they would like to see from employers - genuine connections and meaningful experiences. Whether through virtual check-ins, inclusive cultural celebrations or team volunteering, the message is clear: connection matters.
Curtins' hybrid model isn't static. It’s always evolving based on feedback, striving for stronger connections, better wellbeing and deeper community impact. At Curtins, hybrid working isn’t just changing where we work—it’s redefining how we build a connected, inclusive and purposeful society.
The session sparked engagement, debate and interest from the students. So much so that on the back of the session, Gursimran Kaur, from Teesside University, is now participating in the Curtins Virtual Insight Summer Programme - a six-week programme bringing together emerging talent and industry leaders.
This shows the real-life connections that Purpose Lab can make and how it is breaking down barriers to opportunity.
