Driving social impact through partnership: University of Greenwich and Sodexo
The Purpose Coalition is proud to showcase the collaborative efforts of two of its partners - Sodexo and the University of Greenwich. Since 2020, Sodexo has provided facilities management services to the university while also playing a key role as a strategic partner. Together, they are advancing social mobility and delivering meaningful change across areas such as sustainability, inclusion, skills development and local economic empowerment.
Sodexo has recently published an overview of its 2024 social impact at the University of Greenwich, reflecting its broad contributions to the university community and beyond. The summary below highlights several initiatives from the report that demonstrate the scale and depth of its impact. The full report is available here.
Environmental sustainability: Waste management innovation
As part of its sustainability strategy, Sodexo piloted a food waste recycling initiative at Devonport House. The scheme successfully diverted 480kg of food waste from general disposal and improved recycling rates by 8%. This project sits alongside broader environmental efforts such as a 35% reduction in gas usage and the donation of reusable items to local charities - initiatives that collectively promote responsible consumption and a reduced environmental footprint on campus.
Inclusion and employment: Supporting neurodiverse interns
Sodexo actively supports DFN Project SEARCH by hosting internships for young adults with autism and learning difficulties at the Medway campus. These supported internships, focused on cleaning and portering roles, help students transition from education into the workplace.
The programme benefits Sodexo employees too, who gain experience working with neurodiverse colleagues and developing more inclusive practices. Plans are under way to expand the initiative to additional campuses, reinforcing both partners' commitment to equity and meaningful employment.
Local economic impact: Responsible procurement
In 2024, Sodexo directed more than £800,000 of spend to local micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) partners. Approximately 70% of procurement was channelled through these organisations, helping to boost local economic resilience.
All contracts are subject to a modern slavery clause, and suppliers are required to adhere to a robust code of ethics - ensuring high standards of transparency and sustainability throughout the supply chain.
Promoting health and inclusion: Free period products for staff
During Inclusion Week in September 2024, Sodexo partnered with Egal to provide free, plant-based sanitary products to all female employees at Avery Hill, Greenwich and Medway campuses. This initiative supported wellbeing in the workplace while addressing wider issues around menstrual equity.
The campaign also included a session led by Egal’s Niamh D’Arcy, raising awareness about period poverty and its impacts on education, employment and mental health -particularly among lower-income groups. The initiative reflected a broader commitment to inclusive policies that recognise hidden barriers and foster a supportive work environment.
